BMW is continuing the global rollout of its Neue Klasse. The new BMW iX3 (NA5), the first production model of BMW's new-generation vehicle family, has now arrived in South Africa.

Following its European market launch, the new electric SUV is now making its way to a very different environment. BMW South Africa has released photographs of the iX3 around Cape Town, with mountains, coastline and wide-open roads providing a spectacular backdrop for the latest Neue Klasse model.

It is also an appropriate setting for a vehicle designed to demonstrate that modern electric mobility can go far beyond short urban journeys.

Neue Klasse reaches South Africa

The new BMW iX3 is much more than a conventional model update.

Built around the Neue Klasse architecture, it introduces a new approach to BMW's electric vehicles, combining a completely revised electrical architecture with new battery technology, software, digital interfaces and improved efficiency.

The iX3 is the first production BMW to bring the Neue Klasse philosophy to customers. The technologies introduced here are expected to spread across the company's future model range.

For the South African market, the launch begins with the BMW iX3 50 xDrive, equipped with dual electric motors and all-wheel drive.

More than 800 kilometres of WLTP range

Range is one of the major highlights of the new iX3.

The iX3 50 xDrive uses a 108.7 kWh high-voltage battery and can achieve up to 805 km of WLTP range, depending on specification.

The vehicle uses BMW's sixth-generation eDrive technology, which represents one of the most important technical elements of the Neue Klasse strategy.

Fast charging is equally impressive. At a compatible DC charging station, the iX3 can accept up to 400 kW, allowing a 10–80 percent charge in approximately 21 minutes.

BMW also states that up to 372 km of WLTP range can be added in just 10 minutes under suitable charging conditions. Actual charging performance will naturally depend on battery temperature, state of charge, charging infrastructure and environmental conditions.

345 kW and xDrive all-wheel drive

The BMW iX3 50 xDrive produces up to 345 kW (469 hp) and 645 Nm of torque.

The sprint from 0 to 100 km/h takes approximately 4.9 seconds, while top speed is limited to 210 km/h.

However, BMW's development focus goes well beyond outright performance.

The Neue Klasse electrical architecture brings together powertrain control, braking, energy recuperation and driving dynamics in a much more integrated system.

At the heart of this architecture is BMW's Heart of Joy control unit, one of the four central "superbrains" of the Neue Klasse. BMW says it processes information significantly faster than conventional control units and plays a key role in coordinating the vehicle's driving dynamics.

Why South Africa is an interesting destination

The South African market presents a particularly interesting environment for a long-range electric vehicle.

Distances between major cities can be substantial. The road journey between Cape Town and Johannesburg is roughly 1,400 kilometres, while trips toward the country's north-eastern regions can approach 2,000 kilometres.

Even an iX3 capable of more than 800 kilometres under the WLTP cycle cannot eliminate charging stops on journeys of this scale. Nevertheless, its combination of long range and high-speed charging can make long-distance electric travel considerably more practical.

BMW's South African images deliberately place the iX3 away from the typical urban environment — surrounded by mountains, coastline and open roads.

The message is clear: the new generation of BMW electric vehicles is intended for much more than commuting across a city.

A new BMW design language

The South African launch car is shown in Ocean Wave Blue Metallic, one of the signature colours associated with the launch of the Neue Klasse.

The new iX3 introduces a substantially different interpretation of BMW design. The upright front end, vertically oriented kidney grille, new lighting signature and cleaner body surfaces create a more minimalist appearance while retaining the proportions of a BMW SAV.

The new iX3 measures 4,782 mm in length, 1,895 mm in width and 1,635 mm in height.

Its luggage compartment offers 520 litres of capacity, increasing to up to 1,750 litres with the rear seats folded. There is also an additional 58-litre storage compartment under the bonnet.

A completely redesigned interior

The interior represents another major step forward for BMW.

One of its most recognisable features is BMW Panoramic Vision, a wide information display positioned across the lower section of the driver's field of view.

The cabin follows the Neue Klasse philosophy with a cleaner, more minimalist architecture and a much stronger emphasis on digital interaction.

Despite the technology-heavy approach, BMW says the driver-focused character of its vehicles remains an important part of the experience.

The result is an interior that looks very different from today's BMW cabins while retaining the brand's focus on driving dynamics and ergonomics.

What comes next?

South Africa will initially receive the BMW iX3 50 xDrive.

A more affordable BMW iX3 40 with rear-wheel drive and a smaller battery is expected to follow in the South African market in early 2027.

The arrival of the iX3 therefore represents another step in BMW's global Neue Klasse rollout.

South Africa is an especially interesting market for this technology. Long distances and varying road conditions provide a demanding environment for an electric SUV, while the iX3's combination of range, efficiency and ultra-fast charging is designed to address exactly these challenges.

The BMW iX3 is effectively a preview of BMW's electric future: longer range, much faster charging, a completely new electronic architecture, a radically redesigned interior and software that is becoming an integral part of the vehicle itself.

And the iX3 is only the beginning. Neue Klasse technology will gradually spread across BMW's next generation of models.
